International scholarships

Chevening Scholarships (UK Government / FCDO)
Postgraduate (1-year taught Master's).
Coverage
Full funding package covering university tuition fees, a monthly living stipend, return economy flights, arrival/departure allowances, and visa application costs.
Eligibility
Malaysian citizen; minimum upper second-class (2:1) undergraduate degree or equivalent; minimum 2 years of work experience (equivalent to 2,800 hours); must have applied to 3 eligible UK university courses and secure at least one unconditional offer before the final July deadline.
Application window
Opens early August; closes early October annually (e.g., August 4 to October 6, 2026, for the 2027/28 academic cycle).
Bond / service condition
No corporate bond, but requires returning to Malaysia for a minimum of 2 years post-graduation.
Commonwealth Master's and PhD Scholarships (CSC UK)
Postgraduate (1-year Master's or 3-year PhD).
Coverage
Full university tuition fees, monthly living allowance (~£1,347+ or higher in London), return flights, study travel allowances, thesis grant, and National Health Service (NHS) coverage.
Eligibility
Malaysian citizen; minimum first-class honours (or CGPA ≥ 3.70) for Master's; Master's with distinction for PhD. Study/research proposal must clearly demonstrate an impact on national development in priority sectors (science, healthcare, sustainability, economic growth).
Application window
Opens September; closes December annually for admission the following autumn.
Bond / service condition
Requirement to return to Malaysia immediately upon degree completion; no employer bond.
Rhodes Scholarship for Malaysia (in partnership with Yayasan Khazanah)
Postgraduate (Master's, DPhil/PhD, or second Bachelor's at the University of Oxford).
Coverage
Full payment of all Oxford University and college fees, annual living stipend (over £19,000/year), return economy flights, settling-in allowance, and the UK Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
Eligibility
Malaysian citizen; aged 18–25 (or up to 27 if completing first degree later); completed (or in final year of) an undergraduate degree with first-class honours or equivalent GPA (minimum 3.70+); strong leadership track record, physical vigor, and demonstrated commitment to public service.
Application window
Opens June; closes late August to early September annually.

None.
The Jardine Scholarship (The Jardine Foundation)
Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Master's / PhD).
Approved colleges: Restricted to partner colleges at Oxford (Exeter, Oriel, Queen's, Trinity) and Cambridge (Downing, Peterhouse, Magdalene, Trinity).
Coverage
100% of university and college tuition fees, annual living stipend, standard return airfare, and the UK IHS.
Eligibility
Malaysian citizen or resident for at least 7 years prior to application; under 25 years of age (or within 7 years of completing high school for UG); outstanding academic record (straight A*s / 43+ IB points); demonstrated leadership and community service. Applicants must apply to one of the 8 partner colleges via UCAS or graduate admissions.
Application window
Opens mid-August; closes mid-to-late October annually.

None.
Gates Cambridge Scholarship
Postgraduate (one-year Master's or 3–4 year PhD at the University of Cambridge).
Coverage
Cambridge University composition fee, maintenance allowance (~£20,000/year), single economy airfare at entry and completion, visa/IHS costs, and discretionary project/academic funding.
Eligibility
Non-UK citizen applying to a full-time graduate degree at Cambridge; academic excellence (typically top 2% of undergraduate cohort or 1st Class Honours); demonstrable leadership capacity; compelling commitment to improving the lives of others.
Application window
Submitted via Cambridge's standard graduate application form. Closes according to the course funding deadline (early December or early January annually).
Bond / service condition
None.
British Council GREAT Scholarships
Postgraduate (1-year taught Master's at participating UK universities).
Coverage
A minimum £10,000 tuition fee discount/grant towards one year of postgraduate study.
Eligibility
Malaysian passport holder; hold an undergraduate degree meeting the target course entry requirements; must have received an offer of admission from a UK university partnering with the British Council for the award cycle.
Application window
Application portals open between October and December; individual university deadlines range from March to June.
Bond / service condition
None.

Local Malaysian scholarships (overseas funding)

Yayasan Khazanah Global Scholarship Programme
Undergraduate (pre-university to degree entry, or direct undergraduate entry) and Postgraduate (Master's & PhD).
Approved universities: World top 15 universities (e.g., Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, UCL, LSE).
Coverage
Full tuition and exam fees, monthly living allowances, accommodation, round-trip flights, laptop allowance, book grants, and structured leadership development modules.
Eligibility
Malaysian citizen; Age limits: ≤21 (UG), ≤28 (Master's), ≤32 (PhD). Academic bar: Minimum 8A+ in SPM / straight A*s in A-Levels for UG; minimum 1st Class Honours or CGPA ≥ 3.50 for Master's/PhD. Must hold an offer from an approved overseas institution.
Application window
Typically opens late March; closes mid-April annually.
Bond / service condition
Mandatory employment bond with Khazanah Nasional or linked Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) (duration: 2–6 years depending on funding amount).
Gamuda Scholarship (Overseas Undergraduate Track)
Undergraduate.
Approved fields: Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; Environmental Science/Sustainability; Architecture; Data Science/AI; Software Engineering; Quantity Surveying.
Coverage
Full tuition fees, accommodation allowance, living stipend, study allowances (books, laptop), and return flights to the UK.
Eligibility
Malaysian citizen; age ≤23; minimum 3As in A-Levels / STPM / equivalent; strong leadership record in co-curricular activities; offer letter from an eligible top-tier UK university. Open to both pre-university leavers and first/second-year students currently enrolled in the UK.
Application window
Opens early March; closes late April / early May annually.
Bond / service condition
Contractual employment bond with Gamuda Berhad upon graduation.
Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Kijang Scholarship
Undergraduate (Foundation leading to overseas degree, or direct entry for current undergraduates) and Postgraduate.
Approved fields: Economics, Accounting, Finance, Actuarial Science, Law, Computer Science, Data Science, Cyber Security, Mathematics.
Coverage
Comprehensive sponsorship covering full overseas tuition fees, living allowances, return airfare, book/computer allowances, and medical insurance.
Eligibility
Malaysian citizen; aged ≤19 (pre-U) or ≤22/25 (undergraduate/postgraduate). SPM minimum 8A+ (for pre-U track) or minimum CGPA 3.50 / UK 1st Class standing for current undergraduates; passing rigorous psychometric assessments and Bank Negara interview panels.
Application window
Pre-U track opens post-SPM results (March/April); undergraduate/postgraduate windows typically open in May/June.
Bond / service condition
Service bond with Bank Negara Malaysia (generally 2 years of service for every year of funding).
Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) Excellence Scholarship (Overseas)
Undergraduate.
Approved fields: Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil), Sustainable Agriculture, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Accounting, Finance.
Coverage
Tuition and exam fees, subsistence stipend, accommodation allowances, return airfares, and designated summer internship placements.
Eligibility
Malaysian citizen; age ≤25; minimum CGPA 3.30 or minimum 3As in A-Levels; conditional/unconditional offer from an accredited top-ranking UK university; family gross monthly household income criteria evaluated.
Application window
Opens March; closes late April / early May annually.
Bond / service condition
Employment bond with Sime Darby entities (SD Guthrie, Sime Darby Berhad, or Sime Darby Property).
JPA Program Penajaan Nasional (PPN) & Biasiswa Yang di-Pertuan Agong (BYDPA)
PPN: Undergraduate (top 20–30 SPM scorers nationally, sponsored for A-Levels then deployed to top 10 UK institutions). BYDPA: Postgraduate (Master's and PhD research/taught at world top universities, including Oxbridge/Imperial/UCL).
Coverage
Complete tuition funding, monthly living stipend, return air travel, allowance for books, computer, and warm clothing.
Eligibility
Malaysian citizen. PPN: strictly straight 9A+ in SPM. BYDPA: minimum CGPA 3.75 or 1st Class Honours degree, age ≤35 (Master's) or ≤40 (PhD), holding an unconditional offer from a top QS-ranked UK university in Science, Technology, Economics, or Law.
Application window
PPN opens mid-March to April; BYDPA opens annually in February/March.
Bond / service condition
PPN utilizes a convertible loan model (Pinjaman Boleh Ubah): loan is 100% forgiven if entering the civil service, or discounted to 10–15% based on final academic honors. BYDPA obligates recipients to serve in Malaysia (public or private sector) post-graduation.
MARA World's Top Universities (WTU) Programme
Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Master's / PhD).
Approved universities: Restricted to institutions in the QS Top 30–50 globally (e.g., Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, UCL, King's College London, Edinburgh, Manchester).
Coverage
Full tuition fees, living allowances, warm clothing allowance, visa and IHS fees, and return airfare.
Eligibility
Malaysian citizen of Bumiputera status; Undergraduate: minimum 3A*s / 3As in A-Levels (or equivalent CGPA ≥ 3.75); Postgraduate: minimum CGPA 3.50 or UK 1st Class Honours; unconditional offer letter for an approved STEM or professional degree program.
Application window
Typically opens between June and July annually.
Bond / service condition
Structured as a convertible loan (Pinjaman Boleh Ubah), where 80% to 90% of the principal loan is written off if specific graduating grades/classifications are met.
PETRONAS Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP)
Undergraduate (pre-university to overseas degree pathway).
Approved fields: Chemical/Mechanical/Electrical/Petroleum Engineering, Geosciences, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Finance.
Coverage
Full tuition, accommodation, living expenses, study allowances, book grants, return flights, and medical insurance.
Eligibility
Malaysian citizen; age 17–19; minimum 8As in SPM (with A/A+ strictly required in Mathematics, English, and technical sciences); evaluated through the PETRONAS Young Stars Day (PYSD) assessment.
Application window
Opens immediately following official SPM result releases (typically late March to April).
Bond / service condition
Contractual employment bond to serve PETRONAS upon degree completion.

Working in the UK

While you study

Your Student visa sets how much paid work you can do. If your course is at degree level or above, you can work up to 20 hours a week during term time, and full-time during your university's official vacations. If it's below degree level, the term-time limit is 10 hours a week. You cannot be self-employed, work as a professional sportsperson, sports coach or entertainer, or take a permanent full-time role while your visa says otherwise.

After you graduate

The Graduate visa lets you stay on to work, or look for work, once you've completed an eligible course and your university has confirmed this to the Home Office. Applying on or before 31 December 2026 gives you 2 years (3 years after a PhD); applying from 1 January 2027 gives you 18 months instead. You can work in most jobs, be self-employed, or volunteer while you hold it.
