CEKU is UKECatalyst’s student-led, editorially independent publication platform that covers socio-political, cultural, and welfare topics through written essays, open submissions, multimedia, and podcasts.

Overview and Mandate

Institutional Platform and Editorial Independence

Founded in 1996, CEKU serves as UKEC's primary student-led editorial arm and publishing vehicle under the purview of the UKECatalyst Office. It functions simultaneously as an independent publication and multimedia platform spanning societal affairs, public policy, arts, culture, and student welfare. CEKU preserves an autonomous editorial stance distinct from UKEC’s institutional positions, publishing online articles, social infographics, physical magazine formats, and podcast content throughout the 2026/2027 tenure.

  • CEKU Advocates: Comprehensive analytical coverage addressing pressing socio-political affairs and national policy issues.

  • CEKU Editorials: Long-form critical essays and institutional perspectives produced directly by the internal CEKU editorial team.

  • CEKU Opinions: An open submission portal aggregating perspectives, critiques, and essays from Malaysian students based in the UK, Ireland, and Malaysia.

  • CAKNA: A collaborative portfolio strand with the UKECares Office highlighting social welfare, community advocacy, volunteer initiatives, mental health, and Malaysian student issues.

  • CEKU Inspires: An interview and monthly podcast series engaging prominent Malaysian leaders and public figures, delivered through hybrid and in-person studio recordings.

  • Infographic Series: Condensed visual breakdowns of significant national events, holidays, and cultural topics distributed via social media platforms.

Editorial Governance and Workflow

Submissions undergo a standard review lifecycle encompassing initial peer evaluation, multi-stage editorial revisions, rigorous quality control, visual production design, and final sign-off.

Editorial Legacy and Historical Evolution

Historical Milestones (CEKU 2008)

CEKU maintains a historical tradition of youth-led sociopolitical discourse and written activism. Notably, the 2008 hard-copy print edition, led by Chief Editor Shahril Sufian bin Hamdan, published critical analyses on social privilege (The Nobles and Their Obligations) and structural power abuses (Cruelty is A Matter of Choice, Not Transparent Blouses).

Leadership Restructuring and Modern Expansion (CEKU 2024/2025)

Under the leadership of the Vice Chairperson of the UKECatalyst Office acting as Editor-In-Chief, CEKU expanded its contributor model to combine internal UKECatalyst Executive Councillors with selected external student contributors. This expansion launched the monthly CEKU Inspires video podcast, featuring high-profile Malaysian figures including former Health Director-General Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah.
